White Corn Cake – Arepa Blanca

In Colombia, we have so many kinds of arepas, and it varies by region. This arepa is the most “homie” and “generic” type. It is probably because you can find the dough in every single store. But the best part is that you can make so many variations that will feel like you are eating something different each time. The most traditional way to eat it is with cheese, or cheese and ham. Cheese arepas are my go-to quick snack or light dinner.

I’m a little embarrassed that it took me so long to share this recipe. The truth is I had to try multiple times to have the “perfect” recipe. After all. I have eaten so many arepas that I’m a tough judge when trying them. I’m finally happy with this one and can move on to figure out the next one… Hopefully, it doesn’t take me that long!

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups of Masarepa

  • 1 Teaspoon of Salt

  • 1 Teaspoon of Baking Powder

  • 2 1/2 Cups of Warm Water

  • Vegegatable Oil (To Cook)

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  • In a large bowl, mix the masarepa, salt, baking powder, and warm water.
  • Shape 8 balls with the dough.
  • Flatten the balls to make a 4-inch diameter circle.
  • In a cooking pan, warm up the vegetable oil and cook for 4 minutes each side
  • Bake the arepas for 10 minutes.
